Introducing the Leonov

Another one of my favourite science fiction ships, from the movie 2010, built to scale with my Discovery. This post is long overdue, since the Leonov has been complete since last August. It took longer to take the pictures than to actually build it. :) Follow the link for the pics. For some boring prose, read on.

During the long build of the Discovery, I often thought about building the Leonov to go with it. At least there were pictures of the actual studio model to use for reference! Not the greatest pictures mind you, and it’s missing a few bits here and there, but a lot better than inaccurate design schematics and ‘scale’ reproductions. Those pictures, combined with the usual technique of watching scenes from the movie ad nauseam, were enough to get a good idea of the details and scale.

So every once in a while I would start to conceptualize how the Leonov might come together. I always got stuck on the lack of an 8x8 dark gray radar dish for the main antenna dish though, which I ‘needed’ to get the scale right. One year later, the Discovery complete, facing the reality that a dark gray 8x8 dish would never be made, I finally said, ‘screw it, I’ll just start building the damn thing and see what happens’.

There was a lot of fiddling to get the angles right, gobs of newly discovered (to me) SNOT techniques, and several major redesign/rebuilds (getting the centrifuge perfectly balanced around it’s axis comes to mind). Once I got to the antenna dish, I decided to go with the black 8x8 dish sandwiched between two 6x6 dark gray ones. Not ideal, but I figured it didn’t look too bad. At least it matched the colour scheme of the ship. I’d be interested to hear what others think about this solution and I’m certainly open to other suggestions.

Of course once it was pretty much done Jude comes by and says, ‘you should stick a motor in it’. Such simple words. Another redesign/rebuild of the main forward section to accommodate the motor and gearing, but well worth it. Thanks Jude!

Enjoy,

J

(...) snip (...) Yep, saw this at the Hobby Show and was totally blown away. Having the Discovery and the Leonov sode by side was wonderful. The fact that you did them at the same scale was impressive as well. Lovely job! Dave K (20 years ago, 16-Feb-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) I loved this thing at Brickfest, and I'm glad to see you've finally got it posted online. It was really cool to see it alongside the Discovery too. Have you tried switching the power to a train regulator for shows yet? As for your issues with (...) (20 years ago, 16-Feb-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

This is absolutely awesome. Along with Discovery, they must be a sight to see together. The building techniques convey the appropriate sense of sheer size of the vessels, and the rotating habmodules on the Leonov are very neat. Amazing work! (...) (20 years ago, 16-Feb-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) snip (...) Magnet SNOT on Discovery was really slick! And I think that the dish looked just fine. (...) Jason, this looked simply incredible at BrickFest and I am surprised that you haven't posted it sooner. I was lucky enough to be Space (...) (20 years ago, 17-Feb-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

This was so cool, that I stood next to it on public day at BF 04' and claimed it was mine. That is what happens when you leave your MOC unattended. Hope you don't mind. -Keith (20 years ago, 17-Feb-05, to lugnet.space)

(...) snip (...) It looks magnificent. The two-toned radar dish is actually an improvement on the original, I think. (...) That .wmv is eerie. How beautiful! Does it make noise when it turns? And do you have any images of the two ships side by side? (...) (20 years ago, 17-Feb-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) This is one of those projects that, to put it simply, deserves a standing ovation (and you a possible spot in the ranks of the LEGO Ambassador Program :-) With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen. (20 years ago, 17-Feb-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Way cool! It's really beyond the scope of my vocabulary of superlatives. Nice work. Now, about that wmv file - a few more seconds, and you could loop it. (another of those innocuous suggestions...) James Wilson Dallas, TX (20 years ago, 18-Feb-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Hello! Let me be one of the last to congratulate you on this truely amazing creation. I'm standing in awe. That's simply great. (And I haven't even watched the movie.) Bye Jojo (20 years ago, 21-Feb-05, to lugnet.space)
