Nice to see someone else is an SP fan. Classic Space seems to be "the
thing" around here, and I missed all but the end of that theme, so I've been
feeling kinda left out...
Somehow I don't see myself managing the same thing with both the Solar
Snooper and the Galactic Mediator... they're both very large sets which I
don't happen to own. I also don't relish the idea of having to hunt down,
cannibalize, or purchase all those parts. :P I will have to convert one of
them at some point, though--I've always wanted an excuse to do something
with a double canopy like those two sets have, and my brain is already
overflowing with ways to incorporate the different cell type into the design
(leaving me free to work on the more interesting parts of the project).
I might actually devolve the mini-vehicles from those two sets regardless of
whether I do anything with the actual set. :P The car from Galactic
Mediator will probably end up a lot like the one from Mission Commander, but
what can you do.
One thing I've noticed is that SP2 vehicles seem to be nearly
unarmed--usually it's those two lasers that are part of the standard cockpit
design and that's it--whereas SP1 vehicles tend to have a lot more weapons.
(The exception, of course, is the unarmed Spy-Trak I.) Seriously, the Solar
Snooper is armed about as well as the Message Decoder. (Perhaps weapons
technology improves a LOT during the M:Tron and Blacktron Future Generation
years?) I'm beginning to suspect that SP1 acts as a military force and SP2
is more civillian law enforcement, actually. It would certainly explain why
only the larger sets have any weapons at all. SP2 sets also seem to be much
"smoother" in appearance, whereas SP1 sets have stuff all over them. And
then there are the various specific common features, like SP1's winglets
versus SP2's lasers and the different style cell. So it's really a matter
of swapping out one type of design convention for another and being lucky
that both themes use the same type of canopy. :P
Now I'm wondering what other conversions could be done. Unitron to Futuron?
Ice Planet to M:Tron? Spyrius to BT2? (I've dismissed BT2 to BT1 as mostly
undoable due to the lack of trans yellow versions of all the trans neon
green bits, though I suppose the detachable cockpits could be replaced
completely by a BT1 equivalent.)
Thanks for your comments!
