    Starship Hatch —Travis Matheson
I do not post here much but I recently built something that I though it would be good to share. I'm sure many of you remember Todd Trotter's Sighthound (if you don't, try (URL) and the marvelous hatch he built for it. Well, I recently was (...) (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Chris Giddens
(...) Hey, this really looks interesting. I'll have to try to build it to test it out. If it works (and I don't doubt it does) it looks like a great new door design. Good job. Chris <>< (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Travis Matheson
(...) Thanks. I was a bit concerned that it wouldn't work, had to build a proof-of-concept for it, it took a little while but it worked better than I expected, although the physics side of my mind suspected that it wouldn't (square edges and all) (...)         Re: Starship Hatch —Jon Palmer
Thats way cool. Using those arms was brilliant. I have a feeling we will be seeing more doors like this. - j o n -- | Lego - (URL) Shipyard - (URL) Moonbase - (URL) Store - (URL) <trav@centercom.com.au> wrote in message (...) (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Chris Maddison
(...) That is so sweet! I've been trying for ages to do a door with a similar swinging/sliding motion. I never even considered battle droid arms. Brilliant. Well done sir, well done. -Chris (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Allister McLaren
(...) Ooo. Very nice. I've been casually pondering how to make a door with a similar opening action, but all my ideas turned out far too bulky. Yours is a compact and very elegant design. I think I can find a use for it. If I wore a hat, I'd be (...) (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

Re: Starship Hatch —John P. Henderson
(...) Well that is pretty darn cool! I like how basically simple it is, even though it creates a complex motion (compared to the traditional Lego hinge designs we use more often). Any chance we can get a view of the back side of the doors (to better (...) (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Travis Matheson
(...) Thanks for you kind words Jon. The arms are really where I started with the whole model. they look very similar to the hinge brace that the train doors I observed had. the rest was just figuring out how it would work exactly. Trav (-|-) (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Travis Matheson
(...) Thanks I had been trying to build a cool hatch for some time that didn't require a space for the door to swing open, although this one does have some swing space. The gunship model too proved to be a bit of a creative influence with those rear (...) (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Travis Matheson
(...) thank you, when I started I really wanted to avoid it becoming to bulky. although a bulky version might be useful for some models.. Might look at that (...) The first one I built was a single door. but I wanted to make it wider for an entry (...) (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Gil Shaw
This is really great Travis. I waited to have a better look at the mechanism before responding. The droid arms are an excellent addition -they give it almost a submarine look, secure as they pull the unit tight. Todd's Sighthound is still one of my (...)         Re: Starship Hatch —John Henry Kruer
Wow, very nice. The droid arms work very well for this type of motion, and the overall look is very cool. Defenintly a good idea. Plus, you could try it for single doors, right? Even the back looks spacey. ;-) Very nice! -JHK p.s. Who's the John (...) (22 years ago, 19-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Travis Matheson
(...) Yeah, fits in with the cramped industrial look well. I thought of it as almost like a vault door (...) So simple yet so complex. it's a great model. Trav (-|-) (22 years ago, 19-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Travis Matheson
(...) yeah, works for single doors, though the droid arms restrict you to moving the door 2 or 3 studs to the side. (...) Thanks. (...) hehehe, so many John's... That would be Hendo (Or John P Henderson) he asked to see the back, I'm surprised I (...) (22 years ago, 19-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Mark Nelson
Wowies, Travis!! Quite the doors you have there! Despite the fact that I really wouldn't be able to use them -- no capital ships or anything -- I do appreciate their design! Very ingenous! And it looks great from the back. A suggestion: Try making a (...) (22 years ago, 19-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

(...) best pair of doors around, no, wait.... Yeah, I like them. so shared (...) yes, that would make for a much wider door. would be able to do it to angles too. (...) indeed, I intend to. well at least to try. Trav (-|-) (22 years ago, 19-Dec-02, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Starship Hatch —Paul Hartzog
that is truly one of the coolest things i've ever seen one of the problems w/ doors is space for them to open and close and being able to get them to fit tight your doors are truly revolutionary and i LOOOOOVE them thx for sharing, build more, post (...)      (...) Why thank you (...) it does present extra issues to work around, I certainly agree with you on that. which is why I was working on these to begin with, (...) again thank you.
