Yes indeed, that was the show. The original Japanese name is Gatchaman, but
was imported to the west as Battle of the Planets. The group itself goes by
the collective name of G-Force. Many intros often had G-Force superimposed
on the opening credits....increasing brand recognization I imagine,
accompanying the limited run of toys that were released a year or so into
the series.
They did all indeed have avian costumes that allowed them to fly through
little armpit winglets and seemingly endowed them with some measure of
enhanced strength. Some of the suits also featured grapplers with lines,
etc for fighting the badnicks.
Their ship, the Phoenix, did have a small scout ship mounted to the top (I
think Robin may have built a version of this displayed in the last panel).
Whe the need arose, the Phoenix could become the firey Phoenix, engulfing
itself in flame and employing all sorts of flame-engulfing powers.
