Plug the dimensions (in standard Lego units) into
P=(2lh/x) - cn. P=Number of pieces necessary, l=Length of craft,
h=Height of craft, x=Length of primary piece to be used, c= Number of
current pieces, and n=Length of current pieces. Multipy P by 1.25-1.5 to
account for strengthening the hull etc., and you'll have a rough idea of
how many pieces you will need.
On another note, I'm building a blue and white destroyer right now,
it's about 110 studs long, 16 studs wide, and the main hull is 9 bricks
tall. The superstructure will probably be 15-16 bricks tall.
