Is it possible to connect BT devices to an NXT without using a passkey?

I have not tried this, but I would expect it to work.

The
device I'm trying to use (a Nintendo Wii remote) doesn't use passkeys, AFAIK,
since when I connect it to my PC I skip the pairing process.

Alas, this will not work.

Bluetooth is just a means of carrying communication. Different devices
offer different services, which clients such a PC can connect to.  The
NXT brick offers a serial port and the Wii Remote offers a 'Human
Interface Device' (HID).

The bad news is that the NXT brick and the Wii Remote have completely
different ideas of how to use Bluetooth.

However - there is the possibility that this will work in future.  How
the NXT uses Bluetooth is largely down to the firmware, and Lego have
published the source code earlier this month.  I have previously stated
[1] on The NXT Step blog that I want to try to hack the NXT's Bluetooth
software to talk to standard Bluetooth game controllers.  If this works
Io should be able to add support for the Wii Remote too.  :-)

Cheers,
Tony

(...) Thanks for the good info -- I had forgotten that BT allows for so many services. Mindsensors' Playstation 2 controller interface must be converting the "human interface" signals into serial port messages. Now that the official firmware can be (...)
