Hi everyone,

Randy sent me the enclosed msg which answers some of Scott's questions.
Or at least, indicates they will be answered.

I'd suggest we wait for Randy to update things as he indicates he will,
and then later fire away with questions to him.

Subject: Premature announcement of Interactive C 4.0

Actually, Fred's announcement is a little premature, sorry.

Several important things to know if you do choose to download the
current
version of IC:

1) The libraries are tuned for the Botball contest (www.botball.org)
and by
default include a routine for running the Devantech SRF04 sonar

2) The Mac OS 8/9 port is still early beta-test and has some
problems/missing features.

3) I haven't added the online documentation yet.

4) Downloading firmware to the RCX doesn't explain what's happening to
the
user

In the next few weeks, the OS 8/9 port should settle down, I'll add
documentation, and provide more generic libraries, including a library
for
Handyboards without expansion board.

In the meantime, PLEASE DON'T CROSS-POST FRED'S ANNOUNCEMENT TO RCX
LISTS.
I don't want to get a flood of people using a not-quite-finished
version and
have everyone disappointed.

Hi Fred

Is there a summary of the new features developed in IC 4 ?

From the Newton Labs IC 3.x page they list the improvements over the
freeware
(2.x) version as:
Better integration into the Windows and Macintosh environments.
Integrated development environment for Windows and Macintosh, including
built-in editor (for those who wish to use it).
Integrated C preprocessor, including the ability to use #defined
macros at
the commandline (a feature not even found in standard desktop
computer C
environments, let alone environments for microcontrollers).
Standard C features such as structs and multidimensional arrays.
Integrated (and automatic) pcode downloader for Windows and Macintosh,
including support for the Handy Board and other boards based on the
    6811A1/E1.

Does the 4.x pcode support structs/multidimensional arrays ? What
extras does
4.x give us ?

What about some of the publicly released enhancements for IC ? ie the
smoothpwm
code, improved math libraries etc

Will the pcode source be released ? If so where/when ?

Will the Linux source be released ? ie enabling ports to other Unix'es

Thanks for continuing your support and committment to the IC/HandyBoard
community.

Hi everyone,

The KISS Institute for Practical Robotics (KIPR), a non-profit
educational organization, has been sponsoring continuing work on free
versions of Interactive C.  In the last week, Randy Sargent has
announced Interactive C Version 4, which is available Windows, Linux,
Mac OS 8/9, and Mac OS X platforms.

IC v4 is a huge improvement over the previous free versions of IC, and
in many ways is better than the commercial IC v3 sold by Newton Labs.

You can download IC v4 at http://www.kipr.org/ic/download/ .

The terms of use are: it's free, but any donations made to the KISS
Institute are welcomed.  The KISS Institute is a non-profit charitable
organization and any funds donated to it are fully tax-deductable.

One note for HB users.  Right now IC v4 comes with Handy Board
libraries
that assume the use of the Expansion Board.  Perhaps some enterprising
HB users who don't have an Expansion Board can figure out the new
library file format and come up with a set of lib files for the
non-Expansion Board case.  It shouldn't be too hard.

IC v4 also works with the RCX, so those of you HB + RCX owners should
really have fun.

Yours,
Fred

Fred, Can you tell me if Randy upgraded InteractiveC in version 4 to handle the 64k hack for the Handyboard? You wrote about the hack in the Handyboard FAQ in '98, and that was two IC versions ago. Is it possible that Randy took into acount the 64k (...) (22 years ago, 1-Oct-02, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
