What to start out with? —Robby Cochran
Hello All! I am a newbie to the Lego robotics scene ( I will be receiving a RIS for Christmas ( very excited ) ) and have been following this newsgroup and other sites for the past few weeks. I really do not own very many Lego pieces at the present (...) (25 years ago, 15-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: What to start out with? —Hari Wiguna
Welcome to the world of LEGO & robotics! Right out of the box, 700 parts is more than enough to build interesting robots. I think you should save your money until AFTER you PLAY with your MindStorms. In the mean time, give Lego Shop at home a call, (...) (25 years ago, 15-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) Particularly if you are just starting, and if you are interested in the coding more than the construction, I very highly recommend O'Reilly's Unofficial Guide to Lego Mindstorms. Covers all your bases and is very well written. Luis ###...### (...) (25 years ago, 15-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: What to start out with? —Mike Kory
I like Dave Baum's book better as a first book. Most people in this group seem to use NQC which is covered in-depth. Also has lots of construction ideas and the pictures are a little better.           Re: What to start out with? —Peter Vogel
Well, having read both books now, I have to say this: which book you want first depends on what you are looking for. Jonathan's book (the O'Reilly book) is good if you are looking for a survey of all the programming tools available, and a few basic (...) (25 years ago, 15-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) The DDK is virtually unprogrammable and has limited i/o capabilities, so neither book (as far as I'm aware) touches on it. Sorry... -Luis ###...### Profanity is the one language that all programmers understand. -Anonymous ###...### (25 years ago, 15-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: What to start out with? —Dave Baum
(...) You can do quite a lot with the parts in the box, although eventually you'll want to expand. IMHO, the first items to expand would be: 1) An extra motor 2) A rotation sensor The extra motor means your robots can have more functions. The (...) (25 years ago, 16-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: What to start out with? —Dave Baum
(...) #8286 pre-dates some of the "new" style steering parts shown in the book.
