I recently made a wired remote for testing my robotic platforms using • three
polarity switches, a battery box, and a few long and short wiring leads. • <snip>
I can easily test physical
modifications to my platform without having to write/download any code.

Here is a 3 axis joystick that I think would work in your testing set up.

I could break down the LDraw file into easier to follow instructions if
there is interest.

Twisting the control knob (tire) on the top activates the third polarity
switch.  I made the joystick a while back for running my pneumatic
excavator.  The front two switches run the tracks (standard tank
configuration), and the third axis rotates the body in relation to the
tracks (fairly intuitive).  The joystick produces a fast turn (tracks
opposite) and slow turn one track moving and one stopped) depending on the
position that you move it to.  I was able to operate the joystick with one
had while the other hand operates the a sort-of "virtual" controller that
sits in my hand.  The controller operates all the pneumatics on the boom,
stick and bucket (one finger for each).

Overall, it would probably have been easier (and cheaper?) to just get the • IR
remote, but I liked my approach because I had the parts on hand, and it
doesn't drain my RCX batteries when I'm playing with (er, I mean • _testing_)
the robot.  Also I like having real levers instead of pushing those little
rubber buttons.

I think this Lego joystick would work well for you if you like the lever vs.
the button.

Cheers,
LINC

I bought two shuttles in response to a posting that I saw on the Massachusetts local forum. K B Toy was selling them for about $130 apiece when you could still find them. (There were still a few left in Kingston, MA when I left the store, but that (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.robotics)
