That's the remote control I was talking about. There is only one RCX remote
control. Only three of the buttons on the remote control are useable as
commands to a running RCX program. All the other buttons either cause the
program to stop or pre-empt its outputs to the motors.

If you read the original message, you'll see that Todd was interested in
exploring possibilities in areas where the intelligence required is way beyond
what you can program the RCX to do. These are legitimate and important
applications, though they are apparently of less interest to you.
But, I suggest you both (Dennis and Todd) consider the idea of high-level
commands. The three buttons on the remote could be "search", "attack", and
"retreat", and the RCX program would be responsible for figuring out all the
moves, turns, etc. That would make for quite an interesting challenge, because
your robot's success would depend both on its own intelligence and the human
operator.
