I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard that you can make your RCX program
respond to three of the buttons on the RCX remote control. You can also (if you
need more than three commands) use a second RCX as a remote control. I've run
across a couple web sites where people did that. That means for a battle-robot
competition you would need at least 4 RCX's.
Since that's kind of expensive, and since you mentioned controlling it from a
PC, you might want to try sending messages to the RCX through the IR tower.
(This limits how far your RCX can travel). The following program:
http://graphics.stanford.edu/~kekoa/rcx/send.c
shows how to send data to the RCX. You want to send a "set message" opcode,
which is described here:
http://graphics.stanford.edu/~kekoa/rcx/opcodes.html#set_message
It's two bytes, the opcode and the message. Other relevant information is here:
http://graphics.stanford.edu/~kekoa/rcx/
and if this looks too complex, you probably shouldn't bother trying to control
your battle-robot from a PC this way.

| At a local toystore last night, they had a big setup of Rokenbok (a pseudo-LEGO-compatible construction toy system) with a bunch of radio- controlled dump-trucks, ramps, bridges, balls to move around, and so forth. OK, Rokenbok certainly leaves a (...) (25 years ago, 23-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)
