You can also get fairly good results from using boiling water and ice
water for 100 C and 0 C respectively.  It helps to put the ice water in a
foam cup with a hole in the lid for the sensor, and leave it sit for a few
minutes to give the water time to reach freezing point.  Don't let the
sensor touch the ice cubes, they're below zero.  Impurities in the water
may affect your results.
