Hmmm, Lego gearboxes. I've just spent two weeks playing with different

that the standard gears just don't mesh nicely enough. Making a gearbox is
simple enough and changing it by hand is OK, but a motor just doesn't know
how to wiggle side to side and back and forward when things fail to mesh
first time. A good sincro-mesh would be nice (anyone?).

Lego's Super Car (8880) comes with a 4-speed gearbox that uses loosely
set cogs to engage an axle to an idler gear (I don't know how else to
describe it), which means that one can change gears easily at high rpm
and not worry about synchromeshing the gears because the gears aren't
what are engaging or disengaging--the idler gear and its mate on the
axle do that.  For the racing fans, this is similar to the
sequential/clutchless gearboxes found in supertouring cars.  Using parts
commonly found in the RIS system, one could use a hub (the hub that is
normally used for the tractor) as an idler gear and a 16-tooth gear
sliding in and out of the hub as the engaging gear.

I haven't got the Super Car 8880 (It came and went in my dark ages, anyone got one for sale in the UK). I think I understand how it works, how small do you think you could make that with RIS parts? I'm looking forward to seeing the new super car's (...) (25 years ago, 12-Apr-99, to lugnet.robotics)
