what exactly is the purpose of a differential gear? i've got several of
them, i've seen them used in various projects, but i've never quite
managed to figure out what they do.

| Chris, Differentials are used to distribute rotataion velocity between two axels. The differential is driven by a constant rotational velocity source and this velocity is distributed between the two axels in such a way that their average velocity is (...) | Take a look at this (URL) only will you find some good stuff here about differentials, but transmission, steering, and suspension systems.
