things going on "behind the curtain" in this sensor.

Have you been able to verify this?

Yes, that's theoretical, I have yet to do detailed
testing. Perhaps John Barnes already did that?

   Maybe (John?). But to be honest he's already done an amazing amount of work
on NBC, and only a few of us even have access to two NXT US sensors at this
point. I'm not sure anybody has tested it yet. Anybody?

(...) OK, and since I'm one of the few... I sent up a stationary NXT with an US sensor, and a "target" NXT with an US sensor as well, pointed directly at each other. Furthermore I had the "target" move back and forth to vary the range slightly. I (...) (18 years ago, 22-May-06, to lugnet.robotics)
