I suppose it is a question of availability. Many mindstorms only
contests are about giving all teams the same constraints, and getting
them to perform within them. If a custom sensor is readily available
off the shelf from known suppliers, and all teams could have them as
part of their standard bundle of kits then yes, but if it gave a team
an unfair advantage - then no I wouldnt be happy with it.

In terms of using it myself, I definately would, but then I am no
purist and happily use non-Lego parts where Lego parts cannot do the
required job. I would be happier having one stamped in such a way,
knowing that someone has already thought out the mechanical and
electrical interfacing of such an item, and would save me the time
doing so.

That's a very interesting point "should Lego allow others to make Mindstorms

They could have a "Lego approved" program for 3rd party parts.

I'm very interested to know the public opinion on this.

Many people in the LEGO community are "LEGO Purists".  If LEGO did give a
company or
product a "LEGO Approved" stamp, would you use it, knowing it wasn't actually
made/sold by LEGO?

Would such parts be "legal" in "Mindstorms Only" contests?

If not, what's required to make them legal?
