One question I have* to answer right away is this: "Will it walk?"
The answer is both yes and no. While all the joints are there, the motors
and gearing are there. The fact remains that the sheer computing poer needed
to cordinate 41 motors is a monumental task. Coupled with the fact that the
robots reflexes are not fast enought to master the art of "Falling Forward"

Have you thought about asking for suggestions on some news groups?

I've replied to Eric off-list, since I don't want to mention a
not=yet-but-almost available product again. But in this case I will... we
are planning to release JCX (http://jcx.systronix.com/) starting sometime
this summer. It has the capability to do a task like this. With three
JSTik-powered JCX modules (100x100 mm) you would have 45-60 million Java
byte codes per second of computing power, *real* Java with threads,
realtime extensions, etc, and up to 20 motors per JCX system. Even a
Jstamp-powered JCX module has 3 million byte codes per second of
processing, realtime support, and five expansion slots, each of which can
hold a board which supports eight sensors or four motors - mix and match to
meet your needs. So 20 motors, 40 sensors, or combinations thereof. Plus
more, all to be announced over the summer.

We have hired another Java programmer specifically to work on JCX, so we
really are making good progress. This system has been in development and
refinement now for two years (if it were easy, we'd be already done), with
use in a senior CE/CS/EE class at the Univ of Utah and a few other select
locations.

We will be demoing the production version of some JCX boards at JavaOne
June 10-13. Other information will be posted on the JCX website as it develops.

OK, I've said enough. Back to work on getting JCX done and shipping.

Thanks

Bruce Boyes

The fruits of my labour. This is my greatest Triumph thus far in my long history of Lego Building and as a Robot/Mecha builder. (URL) plan to write up a rather lengthy Tech Document regarding its functionality. Although not set in stone yet, I plan (...) (21 years ago, 9-May-03, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.technic, lugnet.robotics) !
