Have you thought about asking for suggestions on some news groups? What
programming languages have you used for Mindstorms up to now? LeJOS (a
Java implementation) is very popular:

If you were to post a document detailing what RCXs control what motors
and what direction their IR ports are facing, etc. I'm sure some of the
people on that list would find the idea challenging enough that some
really creative ideas would come of it. Imagine, Java on Jama :)
