One thing I like to do when I can't think up anything really interesting, is
to check out the technic manuals on http://library.brickshelf.com/scans/
Of course, there isnt anything original in building stuff from instructions,
but I find it a good place to start. You get lots of new ideas on how to
connect pieces in unfamiliar ways, how gears work well together, and so on.
Also, you probably wont have all the required parts to complete a model,
then you are forced into doing some creative readjustments :)  Finally, you
can build it with the intention of using the RIS motors, sensors and
programming it, and usually you can end up with something quite different
than you originally set out to do.

Also, when you have built two or three of these models, it starts to be come
quite easy to think like "oh, i can use the rack-and-pinion steering from
model X; and the suspension system from model Y, and then maybe i can figure
out a way to add some bumper sensors around the front by myself".

Just some suggestions to get you building :)   I find it best to make
anything at all, rather than sit and stare at the box, wondering what is a
worthy thing to make. You'll end up sitting for weeks :P

Jonathan, you have 'discovered' what all of us discovered, at one time or
another:  The Robotics System is by and large without instruction.  It's • not
a kit with directions ...yes, there are a few examples to get you started,
but mostly you're on your own.

I bought several books and picked likely examples and repeated them.  I • had
to do that just to discover how the pieces fit and the gears mesh and how • to
turn from this direction to that.

Then I picked a project and began to build.  It took a week or so and I • must
have rebuilt each assembly three times before I got it right.  I still do
that, even now.

I taught myself three different software systems.

Some of my larger projects took a month or two of spare time to complete.
It can take a big investment of time.  But where else can you be a 'real
inventor'?

I got it 12 months ago and so far all I have done with the RCX itself is
make a small tank. Anyone got any web-sites, books, ideas or whatever to
help me get "inspired" to make something better with my RIS 2.0?
