Ok, i have just discussed this with someone having a ph.d. in physics and
that's what he told me:
Think of the segway as some big chimney you want to blast. These things break
into two pieces while falling sideways. This is because not all parts of the
falling chimney are accelerated the same way. At the top there's an
additional acceleration to be measured, since the rest of the chimney applies
an additional force to the the top. Somewhere below there's reduced
acceleration to be measured, since top is slowing down the whole process of
falling: The top wants to fall slower, the bottom faster -> the chimney
breaks. And there's some point in between, where you won't measure some
additional acceleration sideways. So what you measure where depends of the
mass distribution in the segway and on the position you attach the
acceleratoin sensor to.

| (...) It might work, but imho not the obvious way. How it won't work: Measure the acceleration sideways. You would measure an acceleration if you were holding the whole setup at a certain angle, but since the whole sensor including the mechanic (...) (22 years ago, 21-Oct-02, to lugnet.robotics)
