Yow!  That's a scary discovery!  (Not the result, of course, but your
experiment design: "plug in RCX; verify that it works.  Reverse (+)
and (-) leads, plug in again, and see what happens.")

Oh ye of little faith... the socket is marked ` 9-12V~ ', the ~ means AC
input.  Don't worry, be happy.  :)
