I use mostly use Rechargeable alkalines in my RCX. Sometimes NiMH. Never NiCd.
A lab might get the best mileage out of NiMH since they seem to care least of
the rechargeables about whether they get discharged to much (alkalines) or too
little (NiCd). The downside is they have to be charged right before use, which
may not be a problem in a school setting where this happens at a predictable
time. Using the Ray-o-vac 8-cell recharger would only require 15(!) outlets for
120 cells.

Personally, I'd prefer a battery pack with removable AA or AAA cells. Cheaper
for me to replace the cells when they wear out, and it can adapt to new battery
technology as it arrives. How about the Electric 9V Battery Box 4 x 14 x 4

The size is about 100 x 55 x 15 mm, which is OK. There's no mAh rating, but
my guess is 700 mAh (this is typical for inexpensive NiCd, NiMH can be 1550
or better while good Alkalines are 2500). We are also looking at hand tool
battery packs (the 12V Milwaukee has a nice compact slide-on mount rather
than the common lumpy 'keyed post' of Porter Cable and DeWalt).

We could also use AA NiMH in a holder and you just put them into a charger
by hand when it's time.

We're thinking of college labs where they will have 12 or 20 JCX systems
and where feeding them alkalines is just not practical or cost effective.
Charging 120 AA cells gets awkward too, so some sort of self-contained
rechargeable pack seems a good idea.

Any of you out there using rechargeable packs? Any ideas or advice in this
area?

Thanks

(...) I would like to follow up on this. The school I volunteer at to teach LEGO Robotics now has 4 RIS 1.5 and 4 RIS 2.0 and batteries are a real problem. Disassembling kids robots to change batteries is a pain! I have been using 1800MAh NiMh AA (...) (23 years ago, 10-Sep-01, to lugnet.robotics)
