For gear spacings, you might try:

My testing shows that errors as great as 5% are usually no problem for
gears.

That *can't* be right.  The tolerable error for two 40t gears is no
different from the error for two 8t gears - so it's certainly NOT a
percentage of the distance between axle centers.

I checked this quite carefully and I believe that an error of one
tenth of a 'stud' either side of the ideal distance is tolerable.

Hence having your table round to the nearest quarter of a stud makes
them useful than they could be for this kind of thing.

That's why my gear meshing tables simply list all possible combinations
(there really aren't all that many)....although I didn't test for half-stud
horizontal spacings (I'll add that the next time I re-do it).

You mention a "new 12t gear" - I've never seen one of those - but since
I generated my gear tables with a computer program it wouldn't be at
all difficult to add it.  Which set(s) have this new part?

(...) Thanks for the link to your gear spacing site. That is sort of what I was looking for though in my chart I aimed at being more general then just a list of workable gear spacing. My diagonal measurements can also be used to find workable beam (...) (23 years ago, 8-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)
