Maybe we could just convince someone (Charlie, perhaps) to come up with a
Lego IR Tower Springboard module for the Visor?!

This doesn't always have a low range; Palm V IR and Palm Pro w/2MB
upgrade IR are both fairly strong. On other models, yes, the range
sucks. Also, there is a omniremote module for the handspring visor which
has a very high power IR LED on it. Also, for the old school Palm Pilot
or Palm Pro you can get a little widget which snaps into the serial port
on the bottom which has high-power IR emission, which will work with
omniremote.

I'm looking at getting a Visor unit. But it depends on what it can do.
Can it use NQC and upload firmware/programs etc?

No, at least not yet. Charlie has discussed with me the *possibility* of
developing a library that other people could use to do IR communication
via the omniremote hardware. This would allow porting NQC to the Palm in
a meaningful way.

My other main use would be a remote that can send messages up to 255.

(A friend of mine is the OmniRemote developer/EE.)

I, personally, have a Handspring Visor (wish I got the bigger model) • which
doesn't have a built-in serial port like the Palm III, for example.  All • I
can do is use option 2 (unless I buy a half-serial cable, but they don;t
always work).

Consider the omniremote module. I find it feasible that Charlie will
give you a discount on the module if you've already paid for the
software, but I can't speak for him.

Can you post some URL's on this info?

The Company:

The Handspring Module:

Keep in mind that the handspring module only sends; The IR on the side
of the unit still does the receiving. With a little solder work,
however, you could run the strong IR sending LED to some other location.

The Omniremote Handspring Module also does X-10 communications; If you
could get bidirectional communication going with a visor with the
omniremote module your legos could turn lights on and off and so on (in
an X-10 equipped environment.) It would be awfully cool to be able to
have the model turn the lights on in a room it entered in which they
were off, so it could navigate, and turn them off again when it leaves
the room (if they weren't already on when it entered.)
