It is possible, but the IR transceiver in most Palms is too weak to control
the device from over ~2 feet away. Most people have success with using a
Palm i neither of two ways:
1.) Use the serial port to connect to the IR tower. Advantages: full tower
range, ability to use BrickRemote, LRemote. Disadvantages: you've got to
lug the tower around with you.
2.) Train OmniRemote to emit the same signals the Lego Remote. Like I
mentioned, this has a low range. Advantages: you don't have to carry the IR
tower. Disadvantages: low range, you've got to find someone with a remote
(or buy one yourself, which somewhat defeats the purpose of having your Palm
act as a remote...), and the fact that I haven't gotten OmniRemote to send
commands correctly yet.
I, personally, have a Handspring Visor (wish I got the bigger model) which
doesn't have a built-in serial port like the Palm III, for example. All I
can do is use option 2 (unless I buy a half-serial cable, but they don;t
always work).
If you want any more info, just tell me.
Tim

| (...) This doesn't always have a low range; Palm V IR and Palm Pro w/2MB upgrade IR are both fairly strong. On other models, yes, the range sucks. Also, there is a omniremote module for the handspring visor which has a very high power IR LED on it. (...) (23 years ago, 19-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

| Hi! Does anybody see a possibility to use the Palmpilots IR-Port with the RCX. I know that it is a IrDA-Port, but is it possible that the RCX understands IrDA or either way the Palm sends some RCX style commands? Any suggestions? Thanx! Sebastian (...)
