I'd vote that at half price, the Extreme Creatures set is a pretty good deal (full price is too much for the piece count), but mostly because of the fiber-optics--although I will say the Constructopedia pushes the user in the direction of (...) (25 years ago, 12-Oct-00, to lugnet.robotics)

I just came back from the St Jacobs Outlet Mall, near Waterloo Ontario, where I discovered a Lego Store. It is not associated with Lego (they say). However, they do have lot quantities of kits at reduced prices, so there must be some connection. (...) (25 years ago, 11-Oct-00, to lugnet.robotics)

Time to jump in.... The FOS uses a small surface mount LED. It's about 2.5mm x 3 mm and mounted to a thin PCB. There are what look like diodes and what I would guess are current limiting resistors on the board also, so good luck trying to have (...)
