I'd vote that at half price, the Extreme Creatures set is a pretty good deal
(full price is too much for the piece count), but mostly because of the
fiber-optics--although I will say the Constructopedia pushes the user in the
direction of creativity--not quite sure how to describe it--something along
the lines of being more organic than mechanical, but that's not quite right,
either. Anyway, it has some pretty good thinking-outside-the-box
challenges/ideas.
The response from viewers of robots using the FOS is almost a universal
"COOL!"--which is the real reason the set is such a nice add-on. I turned a
creation loose in our building's lobby today (pictures soon, notes are up
now at my Robot Diaries), and received several such responses. I can't say
I've found a practical use for them, although after I get a rotation sensor
I have some ideas for using it in an "emotional" robot gizmo (something like
MIT's Kismet, but not 1/100 as advanced--I wonder how an ordinary mortal
like me get a tour of the Media Lab?).
Anway, ultimately, they aren't very useful, but they sure are fun!
