Yes. They can sell parts (all of them :), and we can make firmware for the RCX.
That way they would not have to spend resources in devloping new software, and
we could get the ultimate RCX firmware.

Short answer is NO, it is not copywritable.  The implementation of the
generator and interpretor software are of course copyright.

Considering people have already reverse engineered (most) of the bytecode
implementing new firmware from the ground up would not be a problem. If they
have a patent, its a diferent matter, real lawyer stuff.

The ideal solution is to get Lego to realease the RCX source, with an
appropriately restrictive license.  That would seem a logical step
considering the hobiest nature of the Mindstorm range... they should be
making money from selling the parts IMHO, not charging for software that the
users are clearly happy to maintain and enhance themselves!
