I'd recommend RIS. I haven't tried the RDS, but it looks a lot more simple.
I had a lot of fun with the RIS, and if you program it with the software
from LEGO, you can make a "bump into wall-back up-turn around" robot in
10-15 minutes for the first time, if not less.
BUT...
There is a "demo mode" and tour part of the CD that's really boring. You
can skip it by pressing some buttons (can't remember which ones) but I
didn't know that, I had to go through it all. It's really easy to start
programming without the tour, but I had to go back and check some.

Hi,

Haven't bought anything yet, but I'm very interested in the
Mindstorms kits. I'd like to get your opinion on which would be
better to buy first:

The full Mindstorm Robotics Invention System or the Robotics
Discovery Set. Looks to me like the RDS is a simpler version of
the RIS. Is this correct?

Also, I'd be interested in getting a general sense of how long
it takes to program the beasts once you build them. i.e. 10 minutes,
1 hour etc. I know it depends on the complexity, but I'm trying to
get a sense of the overall effort required to use the product.

Thanks,

Saeed
