Interesting how we disagree here... this is the one and only major beef I have
with this set... The Starwars sets are the only series that LEGO has produced
with well-done and fairly theme-generic detailing, and the stickers in this set
are no exception... The fact is, though, that I HATE stickers. They are
invariably chincy and frankly, look like stickers. I never apply stickers to
LEGO pieces, and ALL of the details (except the afore mentioned slope brick and
R2D2) in this model are stickers! Every one. It's kind of frustrating, because
the model looks quite naked and unconvincing without the details, but looks
even worse with stickers all over it (which will eventually peel and look
crummy). There are so many cases in this model where printing would have been
fairly harmless, and stickers just look bad.
A key example is the Canopy, which requires very precise application of a
single multi-faceted sticker to cover all of its planes & angles, and it still
looks like crap. IMHO, this piece would not have been hurt in the slightest by
being pre-printed, as it is clearly a Canopy, regardless of what model one
decides to utilize it in.
Perhaps the solution is for LEGO to ship both a sticker sheet and a decal
sheet. Decals, I can deal with, and they adhere pretty well to ABS. With a
little clear decal-set, they take on the surface characterisitcs of the part,
and become pretty much permanent (one can still scrape or disolve them off).
Other than that little rant, though, I agree totally. This is a model that
quite frankly, I wish I had designed. It is an example of the sculptural feats
possible with an unlimited supply of LEGO stock... (I especially love the
little details behind R2).
