I find they work well when the arm is studs up (ie attached to the mast with
a 1x4 plate with rod down), and less well for studs down (ie attached to the
mast with a 1x4 or 1x2 plate with rod up). The Port Brique workaround for
the problem with studs down, is to use the foot of the sail above to 'lock'
the sail onto the arm.
On reflection, if I could have all my arms studs up and use only the 2x1
plates with rod to attach sails, I'd be very happy... I think they are
easier to use than the 4x1 plates with ball.
