    custom sails —Stephen Rowe
   hi! i have come to an impasse. i am trying to build custom sails for my ships, but have hit a couple of difficulties. first, what does one use to punch or cut holes to mount them, and how do you cut them so they bulge correctly? i have tried a (...)    (...) Hi Steve, What I've found that works best for punching holes is a leather punch tool! It looks like a set of pliers only it has a wheel on the end.       (...) If you're going to use a paper punch on fabric, you might want to buy a dedicated paper punch and never use it on anything _but_ fabric.      (...) i wonder if they have that at my local fabric store. :-) the stuff i have right now is a heavy 100% cotton canvass. it is relatively stiff, but i may try to stiffen it up.       (...) I'm not familiar with it, but I'm sure most of the fabric stiffeners would be fine! You may have to experiment with whether you want to dilute it or not. I find they work well when the arm is studs up (ie attached to the mast with a 1x4 plate with rod down), and less well for studs down (ie attached to the mast with a 1x4 or 1x2 plate with rod up).    (...) thats some good advice, thanks! i think i will try to stiffen my material up, so it will hold better. i did not think about the cardboard template, but i will try it! i am trying to build accurate sails for the period, and have to figure the (...)
