Hello!
Oh, and hello Toronto again! ;)
The friendliest place on Lugnet is .lugnet/loc/Kalaallit-Nunaat/
http://news.lugnet.com/loc/gl/, I've never witnessed a flame war taking place
there.
No, seriously. I think it has much to do with people knowing each other in
person. And getting other AFOLs to know in person is - of course - easier to
arrange in smaller groups, in terms of goup members as well as in terms of local
distance. Most German and Dutch (they must not be forgotten (they have their own
lug, too, btw: www.lowlug.nl)) regulars on www.1000steine.de I already know in
person, we have met several times on several occasions, some not even
LEGO-related. There's also a chat room on 1000steine which also helps to get
people to know better, because the topics there are not strictly LEGO-related,
either.
Thus you get people better to know than through reading their postings
anonymously. I virtually can imagine their facial expressions when reading their
posts, so I know how seriously I have to take what they are saying/writing. And
people consider twice if they should write something in harsh words and if they
would say it the same way to the addressed persons directly in their face.
That's not the case with most members on lugnet who I only know through their
postings. Postings in a language that's not my mother tongue, what very fact
also adds to the possibility of misunderstanding and getting annoyed easily. I
really try to be nice, though. And I guess many Lugnetters don't know each
other, either, even if there are BrickFests and regional Lug meetings and LTC
shows. The Torontecs (Torontiners, Torontinos, Torontadores), however, do know
each other, so it's easy for them to be friendly :-)
Bye
Jojo
