The “large thing” looks like some kind of coil+ferrite core to me. AFAIK That is really part of the tuned circuit for the radio reception.

That sounds plausible, although I’m not an electronics expert it has that look to me. Ideally it would be good to unsolder it and place it on the other side of the board but that probably won’t be possible. If it was a coil+ferrite core would extra the length of extension wires effect the tuning?

That is definatly a tuning coil. You may be able to swap the coil to the opposite side of the board, but adding long wire would be a vey bad idea. If you swap it, orientation is very important. You will need to mark it’s oreintation on the main board and then remove it. While removed, test continuiety between the wire leads of the coil. If there are 2 pair of connected leads, you should be fine. Just make sure each pair of leads is mated to the correct hole pairs. Be careful, these things are easy to destroy.

I have since unsoldered the battery connections from the board, this allows the whole thing to be removed from the casing. Having has a look at the other side of the board I have decided to leave the coil as it and move the two switches to the other side of the board, as Brian Williams did here The ‘underneath of the board is then pretty much flat with only small surface mount ‘thingys’ and a chip.

If I was to move the coil to the other side it would be pretty easy, it has six pins in two connected sets of three (i.e only two connections) so providing I marked it as you say then it would be a simple swap.

I’m going to be taking more pictures as I go along and doing a write up when I finish.

Tim
