Thanks, Gary! I had the feeling someone else out there would
be interested in this. Good to know I am not the only person
to take an interest in vintage brick variations. :)

Has anyone tried to contact TLC in this matter? They ought to
have drawings and individual ID:s on every mould they made,
and given their great sense of quality since the dawn of the
company, I reckon they have kept records on production runs
for each mold, and noted when each mold was launched and
retired. OK, bricks from one mold have sometimes been kept in
stock for years after the last production run, so this would
not give a 100% accurate date of sale for bricks, but at least
it would give a time frame for when the brick was produced,
thus giving us a definitive first date and an approximate
last date for when the brick was sold.
The task of doing a comprehensive list would not be quite as
daunting if TLC got involved somehow. They should have the hard
facts on this. I doubt they would share the actual mold drawings
with anyone, but old production logs should not be sensitive
information.
I'm not sure I care enough to actually contact TLC, or suggest
that anyone else should do it, I am just saying it could be a
way to get it sorted out once and for all.
It would still be a huge amount of work. The logs would be
on paper, I guess, and not easily summarised.
And after all, all bricks are actually compatible, so I guess
we shouldn't really care too much. I guess I should to get back
to building and stop reading the numbers under the bricks. :)

| (...) Hey, sorry I usually don't hang around these here "parts". :-) Well you guys ask (and answered) some really tough questions.... In my (still!) upcoming Lego CD I will be discussing Lego parts mainly from 1949-80, although for some items I go (...) (19 years ago, 23-Aug-05, to lugnet.parts)
