Hi Robert,
Perhaps you meant to send this out to a more general newsgroup, but, since
you are here...  (SMART is a Seattle Mindstorms group)

David Schilling has told me about a robot built in rtlToronto which has the
gearbox you described.  You can find them at:
  http://news.lugnet.com/org/ca/rtltoronto/
David, can you point more specifically to the robot that has this gearbox?

I have played a bit with using the IR port and light sensor to detect
objects in front to the rcx.  I used a small Lego light that flashes on and
off.  By looking at the difference in the light sensor reading between when
light is on v. off I can get an idea of how close/reflective an object is in
front.  This only really worked for me when the ambient light was low (like
at home) and failed miserably at the event where there were huge picture
windows offering lots of ambinet light.  I used the IR port (by sending out
an endless stream of messages) to suppliment the light.  It turns out the
Lego light sensor is very sensative to IR light.

You can look at the website of Workshop3D to get some photos or our last RCX
challenge here in Seattle which did include a sumo event.

Good luck,

Gus

(...) Actually it was me (David's little Brother) who built it and David came from Seattle to program it. The reason I made it with a transmission is because it was too slow the first time I built it and I knew that if I left it like that, the other (...) Hello, all. Several friends and I are beginning a sumo competition in Denver. I've seen references to a couple of things that are very interesting, and am looking for more info: 1> Shifting transmissions- low mode for push, high mode for search. Is (...)
