The same kinda thing works on eBay - you'll need an accomplice to watch the bidding & make sure they win the auction. You still pay the listing fee. Or you can set an un-realistic reserve, but then the listing fee will be higher, and you still have (...)   Re: LARGEST LEGO LOT ON EBAY EVER!! (???)

In the real world, if the buyer wants a valuation only, then they instruct the auctioneer to that effect, and the auctioneer bids for them. They win, but still pay a buyer's fee. (24 years ago, 7-Feb-01, to lugnet.general, lugnet.market.buy-sell-trade, lugnet.org.us.gardenslug)

Re: LARGEST LEGO LOT ON EBAY EVER!! (???)

(...) This could backfire on the seller, then, if the only reason for the auction is to get a value for insurance purposes. If people know there's no way they'll ever match the reserve, they won't bid on it. Since it's not honest to get a valuation (...) (...) I've been there too... I've never fully sorted all of 20000 pieces I took on. A lesson like that might teach you not to do it again, but, there's nothing quite like the first plunge, especially if it's sets from your dark ages. (...) Somewhere in the "high 5 figures" is what he put in the auction notes. I'd guess, since he called the 'minimum value' 50 grand if he broke it up, that he's looking for 80 or 90 grand.
