I've done some checking around. To start with, I assumed we would try
to get a sign that was roughly 2 ft x 8 ft, that we could use either
up on a wall (ie. behind the display), or hanging down in front of the
display along the table skirt.
The least expensive type of sign is a vinyl sign. Basically a long
plastic banner with grommets on the corners (and a couple along the
middle) to hang it up. You simply roll it away and store it in a tube
when not using it.
We could also go with a rigid sign, but for the size that I think we
should get, it would be a real pain to transport and store.
There are a couple of other considerations. For a cheap sign, the
signmakers use standard, solid colours in vinyl. A computer cuts the
shapes and bonds them to your sign. This is the cheapest type of
sign, but we would not be able to have the coloured bricks rendered in
shades of red, blue, and yellow. They would be solid colours. We
could use two shades of each; One for the front left end of the bricks
(the bright side), and one for the right side (in shadow) of the
bricks. However, you pay 5% more for each colour added to the sign.
The other way is to digitally print the image. Basically, this will
give us the complete "photorealistic" shading on the brick graphic.
Of course, this method is more expensive.
There is a compromise that most signmakers are willing to do. They
will print the brick graphic digitally (full shading), and do all the
rest (text, maple leaf) with cut vinyl. To me, this seems the best
solution.
Anyway, while I'm still waiting for a couple of quotes, it looks like
it's going to cost us at least $100 for the sign as I've described
here. Quotes so far have ranged from about $90 to $200, with no
signmaker actually having graphic files to price it out specifically.
I have now finished these in hi resolution, ready for them to use.
Logo Idea 17 is the one I used.
I will get a couple of firm quotes early next week, and post them
here. I just wanted to keep you informed.
Please post any comments or suggestions.
Robin
P.S. As an aside, I now have my Metroliner in my hands, along with
another level crossing, in case Dean needs some more pieces. I don't
have the monorail engine yet, however. I should have it soon.

| (...) Do we really want to spend this much right now, considering I didn't think we'd completely settled on the logo? Could we not get a biggish printout on paper (say 2-3ft long) and mount it on a piece of foamcore? Kevin ---...--- Personal Lego (...) (24 years ago, 29-Oct-00, to lugnet.org.ca.vlc)

| OK, more final decisions to make. I've hopefully compiled all the information needed for us to decide on what type of sign we want. There are 4 options below. Personally, I'm more in favour of spending a little bit more, and having a better sign. My (...) (24 years ago, 3-Nov-00, to lugnet.org.ca.vlc)

| I rotated the lego blocks 180 degrees, and I like it a lot better. They look a lot more like Lego bricks, but the geometry is still (intentionally) wrong, studs a little high, etc., so hopefully Lego won't mind too much. It can be seen on the (...) (24 years ago, 5-Nov-00, to lugnet.org.ca.vlc)

| I shrunk the studs down a little on the brick graphic, and it looks better. The change is not dramatic but does help. For time's sake, I'm not posting it anywhere. It will go into the sign printers today. I'll also begin the T-shirts. Robin (24 years ago, 6-Nov-00, to lugnet.org.ca.vlc)
