Hi everyone... some of you may have met me at rtl14 or the dinner. Those that
didn't may refer to me as 'that guy' or simply 'hey you'.

I've been reading the posts for a while on the connect4 game, so I just wanted
to throw in my $0.02. Unless someone's a genius, it looks to me like the robot
in question requires at minimum three motors. I (and perhaps others) only have
one RCX, and many folks prefer to make single RCX bots. So I'd definitely not
like to have to give up a motor port for the 'end-of-turn' signal. However, I
don't think it's necessary to even give up a second sensor. If the opposing RCXs
connect sensor ports to each other, and then both connect in parallel to it
either a touch sensor or the float/brake motor port thing, then both bots will
receive the signal and both can transmit in the same wire.

It will simply mean that at the end of your turn, you need to short the circuit
(or brake the motor or touch the sensor) and then release it again so you're
able to receive the signal back from the other bot. We could make it so that
your 'turn time' starts once your opponent is off the sensor.

Also, I liked the idea that someone mentioned a while ago of doing it 'chess
clock' style, where rather than a limit for your turn, you get say 5 minutes for
the whole game and once someone's expires they forfeit. I'd rather be able to
give myself more time for some moves that others. And I'm not even sure I'll
have my cartridge hold all 21 pieces -- if it can't win in 10 or 15 moves, it
probably won't be able to win at all. In theory, at any rate, an algorithm that
thinks 6 moves ahead should consistently beat one that thinks only 4 moves
ahead.

(...) Here's a picture of what I mean: (I only have 1 RCX, so sensor ports 1 and 3 represent the two different bots. If either sensor gets pressed, both ports register it.) (URL) (21 years ago, 24-Sep-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto, FTX)
