I paid a visit to the Sears Clearance Center in Brampton this evening.
Sorry, I didn't think to write down any set numbers or specific prices
but I do know that they were all marked down to 50% of Sears' regular
price. Here's what I found:
Lots of Alpha Team
Lots of Lego Soccer (the main set)
At least 3 Vision Command sets
At least 6 Studio's main sets (the one with the camera)
Maybe a dozen Studio's sets with the airplane crashed into the tree
And now the bizzar part ....
There *were* 2 RIS2.0 sets.
Not necessarily strange in it's own right, but...
I was initially surprised to see them there, given that they were only
introduced in mid fall (maybe later in Canada?). I didn't think I'd
find one on clearance this soon. Anyway, I looked it over, remembered
that I already have the 1.0 and 1.5 sets and a spare 2.0 RCX,
remembered also that bringing it home would mean facing my wife who
wouldn't be too pleased given the Lego binge I've been on all year
(thank's Nortel). So I put it back.
A few minutes later, I came across the second bizzare one, which put
me over the edge. I had to buy it, just for the novelty.
IT'S ENTIRELY* IN GERMAN??!!??
Box, manuals, CD - everything!
How the hell does this end up in a Sears store? Am I not correct in
believing that you can't sell something in Canada unless the packaging
and manuals are in one or both official languages? I was under the
impression that the law *required* English or French labelling, even
if it's a Avery label stuck on an imported product as an after
thought. For that matter, why would Sears even *have* a German edition
anyway? It's not like there's a market for it here.
So now a question:
All the poly bags seem to be present, as are the playfield, USB tower,
registration card, Mindstorm's User card and Constructopedia.
Are there any manuals missing (the box had been opened)? I note that
my 1.0 had a Users Manual. Should there still be one in the 2.0?
Another side note (and question):
There's a postage reply card included offering "Roboter programmieren"
by Dirk Louls and Peter Muller for 39.95DM. Has anyone ever heard of
this book? Is it being made available through Canadian RIS 2.0's?
On the cover of the book are three teens looking at an R2D2 - like
robot, but it isn't the one from the Droid Developer Kit. First of
all, it has red feet, but most interestingly, it has a destinctly
GREEN microscout. Has anyone ever seen such a thing?

*... and yes, when you turn it on, it even beeps in German
Pretend that was funnier than anything Chris has produced lately.
