Yes, they will be painted onto the starting squares, they will be 18x18".  No we
have not done this--I just sent a note to Chris about this last night :)

I dunno how smooth the joint is on the 8x8--I think the center part is good 'casue it's got the piano hinge under it, but out to the edges, where there's no hinge, there's a bit of a lip. (...)
