Guys,

How can I reduce the noise that comes from a set of gears?

Maybe some thick grease of some sort would help.

Thanks for the info derek.  DOC, sent me an e-mail with this same type of info
and much more. (thanks DOC)

Just to clarify the "noise" is more from the "whirr" of the motor/gear, than the
actual bolt slam.

I have a cool new weiser lock set; the automated kind.  Forget keys, just punch
in a code.  Its so cool!!!

How big is the code space on that lock?  We had the mechanical form of
this kind of lock on one of the doors here at work.  The kind with 5
buttons.  We worked out that worse case a person could crack it in less
then 20 minutes.

the manufacture CALIMS close to 1/2 a MILLION different codes.  I dont have the
background with the mechanical 5 button units to disprove the 20 min hack. BUT
to make me sleep at night, this electronic version does have some kind of delay,
and an annoying beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep after 3 wrong codes.

As an added bit of security. Abby, the attack princess would have no problem
running up to any would be robber and scream

"hhhuuugssss"

or the every fear induceing phrase

"bobble"

look our cat burgler.

We pointed this out to facilities, but they didn't listen.  After the
office was robbed, we pointed it out again.  They still didn't listen.
So we proceeded to crack the combination and give it to them every time
they changed it.  After the second robbery they smartened up and removed
it.  Haven't been broken into since.

those locks are the ones with the 4 or 5 brushed silver buttons verticly right?

A front door is not an unreasonable place to put one of these locks.
Someone might notice a person standing at your door punching numbers.  I
wouldn't put on on a back door though.  I'd also disable it if I was
away on vacation.

Derek

all good suggestions. and ALL are implemented.  Along with the man trap, and
front door pit of death, that i keep covered with the throw rug.

:)

thanks.

Chris

(...) Cool, this is exactly what you need. Even a small code space is good if there is a code entry delay that makes walking the space take an unreasonable amount of time. My recommendation would be to use as many digits in the code as the device (...) (20 years ago, 15-Dec-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
