ps. I think we can all guess what the obvious one is.

:)

Tower of Terror at DCA should soft-open soon (although I haven't been following
that ride very closely, so I'm not sure if that's a week away or 2 months away).
I've heard good things about Soarin' Over California and Indiana Jones.

rcdb is an excellent tool for finding parks/coasters:

As others have said, Knotts would be an awesome choice (under construction is
their new custom HUSS Topspin, RipTide, with florless seating).  I don't know if
you're going to Northern or Southern California, but there are 2 SixFlags parks
(Marine World in Valejo and Magic Mountain in Valencia).  Marine World has a
great looking B+M Floorless, bastardised Intamin Impulse Coaster (hilarious
story behind that one - park has a 150' height limit, they bought a stock
Intamin Impulse which is 55 m / 180', and told everyone "No really, it's only
150 feet."  Zonining comission or whatever found out, and made them modify the
ride, so they chopped down the back spike and totally reprofiled the front
spike... pics at: http://www.rcdb.com/installationdetail1143.htm ).  Magic
Mountain has a lot, but count on a) 50% of the rides being closed, and b) the
ones that are open will have like 1 train and you'll get beat up by the local
thugs before you can get to the loading platform.  :)

PGA in Santa Clara just lost their 2 signature coasters.  :(  Stealth went to
Carowinds (renamed "BORG Assimilator", wtf), and Tidal Wave was dismantled.

Play around with rcdb, I think Knotts and SFMM are both really close to
DisneyLand so if you're in that area then those are probably obvious choices.
Magic Mountain has the more extreme rides (ie, X, DejaVu, Scream), but Knotts
sounds like it's got a lot better atmosphere.

Thanks to all the Iains out there for your replays. I believe, along with the obvious one, I'll be heading to Knott's Berry Farm. I must say I was a little confused by the name when Jeff first listed off the possibilities. It sounded like he was (...) (21 years ago, 9-Mar-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
