I’ve been wondering about this for a while, but if the final result does end up being a bit sluggish, or not quite powerful enough to drive over small pebbles, would it help to hook two drive motors up to each of the center wheels? I get the idea that you want to avoid putting cumbersome drive motors on the four wheels that steer, and this might be a solution if it turns out to be a problem.

Now, to lobotomize the rest of the rover to fit in the RCX. The cavity is almost exactly the width and length of an RCX, as if they designed it to work this way.

I believe they did design it with that in mind, though probably not quite to the extent of figuring out exactly how to make it all work.
