My wife is having a bit of a crisis at work. She's on a small network and
their printer isn't working properly. She's the only one in the office right
now.

She's tried unloading and reloading the printer software, as well as
rebooting the computer and printer. She's running Windoze 2000. The printer
is an HP laser-something.

The problem is when she prints (from any program: Word, Excel, etc.), the
printer will get halfway through the job, and then stall. It eventually
times out and cancels the job.

Could anyone please offer any advice? I know some of the details are vague,
but then she's not fully experienced in IT-type work (neither am I).

Things to check:
Are there any error conditions on the printer or the workstation?
Can she print a printer test page?  The method for doing this varies with
which specific printer it is.  I could tell you more specifics if I knew
which model.
Can she print a test page? (bring up the printer properties dialogue box and
hit the [Print Test Page])
Can she print a text file (using notepad, for example, cut and paste a word
file she is having trouple with into notepad and try printing)?

That was from an attempt to print from M$ Word. (...) Yes. The test page comes out (...) (21 years ago, 29-Apr-03, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
