  GEEKS HELP!

I normally don't post here (or even subscribe) but I need the assistance of the experts:-) I have the opportunity to buy the following computer used for 8 weeks at a computer camp: COMPUTER SPECIFICATIONS: -Pentium III 450mhz -64MB RAM -17 inch (...) John Neal <johnneal@uswest.net> wrote (...) In Oz, about $AUS2000. So maybe $US1600? That's wholesale-ish for an equivalent clone, so it depends what you want out of it. If the warranty is worth money to you, then more, but if not then less. Moz (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: geeks help!

(...) Just looked at www.gateway.com and a slightly better system, new, is $1449. So take away some graphics acceleration, software bundle, and 8 weeks of use and I'd guesstimate $1000, but then I'm not in the states and have no idea about PC values (...)   Re: GEEKS HELP!

(...) If that's a Gateway then I'd say look at a comparable model on their website, then think maybe 75% or less of that price. I wouldn't pay more than maybe ... $1100-1200 for it? I wouldn't buy it at all, but if I were recommending it I wouldn't (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

I didn't want to taint all of your responses. They want $1099. So am I hearing that would be a good deal, maybe not a great deal? Would *you* touch it? -JOhn (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: GEEKS HELP!

(...) The hard drive is a little undersized. With Office2000 approaching 1.0 GB, I don't know if it would last that long. (Depends on what you would do with it.) Personally, I would buy a non-intel chip (and save a lot there) to splurge on a much, (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: GEEKS HELP!

(...) On the plus side, hard drive space is one of the easier things to enhance. Get a second drive, set the M/S jumpers (on both drives, right?), and stick it into the system. Steve (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: GEEKS HELP!

(...) I'd say it's an ok deal, especially if you don't build your own or can't find a better deal. No, I would not buy it, at any price. Well, maybe for $100, but I don't buy stock machines, not for myself. (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: GEEKS HELP!

(...) Oh, Office2k isn't that big, not unless you install every single little thing, including maybe a ton of clipart. I just did a reinstall of almost the full thing yesterday (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Frontpage) with all the templates, (...) (25 years ago, 12-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: GEEKS HELP!

  Thank You! (wasRe: GEEKS HELP!)

Thanks, Geeks, for your help. I decided to buy the computer, even though it's a <ptooey> PC;-) The final deciding factors were: Can now get Mindstorms, and will now be able to get into ldraw{:^D And now I will be able to jump on the "Thanks, (...) (...) Well, just think, for just a little more than that $1100 you could have gotten yourself an iMac, in your choice of flavors. Oh, that's right, you already have a toy - you wanted a computer. :) (25 years ago, 13-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
