I'm buying a Shuttle SV24 for LDRAW and Linux. It's a toaster-sized PC you
can put together for under $600:

http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2001q4/shuttle-sv24/index.x?pg=1

Advantages: low hassle, lots of ports for exotic input/output devices, and
it's small enough to hide.

Disadvantages: bad for games, not cutting-edge (P III to 1.1ghz).

Did you see the other machine at that site, the "Pandora's box"??? What did
you think of IT?

I think Pandora is ugly (Shuttle SV24 is more R2D2 cute) and I'd rather make
my own case first (heh heh...) Anyway, good luck finding it in the USA. You
can order the SV24 from outpost.com with or without a CPU. (see
chipmerchant.com for that, see crucial.com for the memory.) Also mwave.com
(where the FV24 with no case is $120.)

I'm in the market for a new desktop at the mo too so this was interesting,

It's a really, really big market. Shuttle SV24 costs a little more than most
and underperforms. It's only expandable with 1 PCI card. Don't say I didn't
warn you.

I'm sure there will be a follow-on and competition soon.
