Is it possible to setup domains on a computer say:

jamie.org
imndiot.com

and so on, on a computer that isn't connected to the net. The names are
essentially made up, and i want ot set them up with servers (later). I am
pretty sure this is in the DNS realm, it's just that i can't get the thing
working.

Just set up your DNS as authoritative for these domains. To prevent it
trying to access the global root servers whenever you try and access a
domain outside of your network you can make your DNS server a root server,
that makes it think it has all data for the whole network and just reply
with a "no such host" for domains it doesn't know about.

if only a few hosts are supposed to access those "domains", why bother
with dns at all?  just set up the hosts file on all the computers to
point those domains to whatever IP you need...

Dan (the other one, I guess :)

One of the things I wanted my home network to be able to do, though, was handle the "LAN (...) (24 years ago, 16-Mar-01, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
