Hmm, for $3700, I can get

  16x/40x DVD drive

from Gateway.

ewewewewewew.  Sorry, I have to deal with some gateways at work, and they all,
without exception, suck.  If you want a windows based machine, why not go with dell?

a quick look shows 1GHz PIII, 256MB 19" monitor, 40GB HD, DVD and CDRW for $4029 :)

What would be the main differences between these machines, especially in terms
of performance?  What's the better deal?

like I said, I'd stay away from gateways, and prob go with linux - but I'm biased :)
