Re: Government's role [Was: Re: What happened?]

(...) Hm. (...) Odd. Maybe it's just an interaction between CNews and Netscape, then - the servers at my ISP run Diablo on linux and <something> on Solaris, respectively. Jasper (25 years ago, 2-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Todd Lehman wrote in message <37a0e8e2.108331275@...et.com>... (...) Is the east coast you refer to the upper part of maine? I never heard it pronounced like that. (...) (25 years ago, 31-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: testing new profile

(...) Here's a popular sig going around: "The day Microsoft starts selling products that don't suck, is probably the day they start selling vaccuum cleaners." --Todd (25 years ago, 30-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  O vs WO vs AH

(...) Hey, how close is that to TWOD? (I gather that's the native-East-Coast way to pronounce it -- similar to BWOS'-tin. :) Where I grew up (Minneapolis) it's pronounced TAHD, but not quite the nasal TAAHHHD that they say in Milwaukee and Chicago.   Re: Phonetics for "LUGNET" trademark and member IDs (was Re: member id's: simple numbers or something mo

(...) That's essentially the problem with colloquial phonetic spelling -- there are two methods. Some people (like me) use existing words whenever existing words are available: Todd: "TODD", Lugnet: "LUG-net", Steve: "STEVE", phonetic: (...) (25 years ago, 29-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Geometry

(...) With a, b and c being the length of the sides, and A being the angle of the edge just opposite of a? Why, that looks just perfect! Thanks! (I'm used to using A, B and C for the lengths and the corresponding lowercase letters for the angles, so (...) (25 years ago, 29-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

(...) I don't actually know a sonorant from a fricative either, aside from what I can figure out by looking at the examples. But if Tom and Jeremy are into linguistics they probably already know more about it than we do {-; (...) You can use it if (...) (25 years ago, 28-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  phonetics

(...) Hmm. Y'know, you're right! -- I should've simply written MUCK. By MUHK, I was trying to get the "uh" sound. I'm no phoneticist! :) Anyway, so his last named is actually pronounced MUCK-ow, but we incorrectly pronounced it MOO-kow (or MUKE-ow), (...) (25 years ago, 28-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Geometry

(...) Reaching way, way back... Can you use the law of sines? sin A / a = sin B / b = sin C / c Seems like there's a step missing though. Perhaps the law of cosines is better: a*a + b*b + c*c = -2bc*cos(A) Solve for A? Anyhow, good luck. Don (25 years ago, 28-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Geometry

Suppose I have a triangle, in which I know the lengths of the three sides. I want to find the corresponding angles inside the triangles. Is there a quick and simple way to do that? I know that I can divide the triangle into two triangles with a 90° (...) (25 years ago, 28-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: OS advocacy (was: Re: Perl rules!)

(...) No, what I meant, even if it didn't come through clearly, was that if I were to choose to spend $2800 on a computer (which I would not NEED to do, unless I wanted a true behemoth of a machine) I could put one together that would outperform, in (...)   Re: OS advocacy (was: Re: Perl rules!)

(...) Well, that's a good point. I could buy a prebuilt machine that matches that G3's specs for $1626. Basically the same machine I just ordered for myself at work minus the 21" monitor. And I won't have to buy a real keyboard and mouse in addition (...) (25 years ago, 27-Jul-99, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, lugnet.off-topic.geek)

Re: OS advocacy (was: Re: Perl rules!)

(...) I frankly don't know all the specs of all the machines around, but WRT the machines that I have around, I can count on the Macs being ~30% more expensive and a variable amount faster in ways that I find important. (...) Faster? In what way, running what apps? Sorry, but having used everything from the original lunchbox to the latest blue+white G3 on the Mac side and everything from the 8086 to a fully tripped-out P3-550, it ain't so.   Re: OS advocacy (was: Re: Perl rules!)

(...) Unfortunately, there's raw speed and then there's effective speed. Today's Windows machine takes anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes to boot, in my experience.
